COP29 Organizers Aim to Use Sustainable Energy During the Event

Organizers behind the upcoming COP29 have revealed that they will use sustainable energy to power the conference venue as they seek to promote sustainability and reduce the event’s environmental impact. According to the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company, sustainable energy solutions will be implemented throughout the event to achieve carbon neutrality, Axernews says.

The conference will be held at the Baku Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11th to 22nd, with hydrated vegetable oil (HVO) acting as the event’s main energy supply. According to the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company, its planning activities are based on a policy of sustainability with 7 main commitments. Cutting greenhouse gas emissions by adopting clean energy, balancing unavoidable carbon emissions, and improving energy efficiency is the sustainability policy’s main commitment.

The second main commitment involves promoting sustainable transportation, providing eco-friendly retail products, and promoting sustainable practices such as banning single-use plastics. As a result, hydrated vegetable oil was selected as the upcoming conference’s main energy source as part of the sustainability policy’s two main commitments.

The aim is to cut its greenhouse gas emissions associated with the conference significantly. Hydrated vegetable oil (HVO) was chosen as it is much more sustainable compared to conventional fossil fuels. Although combusting HVO produces greenhouse gas emissions, these emissions are offset by the atmospheric carbon that’s absorbed by plant biomass used to produce the oil. This made HVO a suitable alternative to fossil fuels like oil and natural gas as energy sources for the COP29 conference.

HVO can also improve air quality throughout the Baku stadium by reducing emissions such as sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. In addition to HVO, other renewable energy sources will cover all of the conference’s energy needs in place of the usual fossil fuels to keep its emissions at a minimum.

SOCAR Green will help the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company implement its plans to power the conference with 100% renewable energy. A COP29 Energy Transition Partner, the company will supply the hydrated vegetable oil required to power the nearly two-week event next month.

SOCAR Green is a State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) subsidiary with several green energy projects in Azerbaijan. This includes the 240 MW Absheron-Garadagh wind project, a 315 MW solar energy project in Neftchala, and a 445 MW solar project in Bilasuvar.

According to Axernews, the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company is confident that its decision to use hydrated vegetable oil as the conference’s main source of energy will act as a precedent for future international events and strengthen COP29 Azerbaijan’s commitment to achieving sustainability and carbon neutrality.

The push to move away from “dirty fuels” to more sustainable energy sources is going to be aided by the ramping up of the current supplies of the minerals needed to facilitate this transition. Companies like First Tellurium Corp. (CSE: FTEL) (OTCQB: FSTTF) have taken this challenge head-on and are focused on creating supply chains of these metals within the North American region.
