Researchers from the University of California, Merced have published a paper outlining the benefits of charging battery electric vehicles (BEVs) during the day. Although this contradicts the current trend of overnight charging, the UC Merced research team argues that daytime EV charging is easier and cheaper compared to charging at night.
Past studies have shown that most EV drivers charge their vehicles at home. Due to the high cost of switching to an EV, the average electric vehicle owner is a higher-income individual with a garage, driveway, or regular access to a parking space. With this dedicated space, EV owners can install private home chargers, allowing them to charge easily and conveniently.
Still, while home charging is convenient, the UC Merced paper suggests that EV owners can maximize benefits by charging their cars during the day instead of overnight. Titled “Aligning Electric Vehicle Charging with the Sun: An Opportunity for Daytime Charging?”, the paper was published in the Electricity Journal by UC Merced mechanical engineering Ph.D. student Farzan Zare Afifi, electrical engineering Professor Sarah Kurtz, and mechanical engineering Professor Ricardo Pinto de Castro.
The study indicates that installing slow EV charging infrastructure in both residential and non-residential settings, where cars typically remain parked during the day, could make daytime charging more practical and economical than nighttime charging. According to the researchers, daytime charging could reduce the need for costly energy storage by allowing electric cars to draw power directly from solar energy instead of the grid.
Electric cars become completely emission-free when paired with renewable energy sources. However, since solar energy production peaks during the day, solar farms often store excess energy for nighttime use. Charging directly from solar energy during the day could reduce reliance on energy storage technology while lowering nighttime electricity demand.
Additionally, daytime charging may be more convenient, depending on an EV owner’s lifestyle. Owners with workplace charging access could charge their cars while working, eliminating the need for overnight home charging, especially for those with short daily commutes. In such cases, daytime charging is both cheaper and more practical than home charging.
As EV adoption grows, encouraging daytime charging could reduce strain on the power grid, increase renewable energy efficiency, and make electric vehicle ownership more affordable and sustainable in the long run. As the total ownership costs of electric vehicles decline, businesses like SolarBank Corp. (NASDAQ: SUUN) (Cboe CA: SUNN) (FSE: GY2) are likely to see an uptick in their sales as more auto manufacturers purchase increasing volumes of batteries to power the vehicles they sell.
